Is it possible to change the resolution of the image taken by the camera mid-round, to allow the camera to see further in range?

It is indeed possible and was a feature added in the update V2, see the original blog post.
Make sure you are running the update. Then call R.see with a valid resolution argument e.g.

from sr.robot import *
R = robot()
markers = R.see(res=(640, 480))
#Now later in program
markers = R.see(res(1920×1440))
#Code that can see clearly now...
